Like with all locations, a sinister side can always be found, if you only scratch the surface.
The old historic court house has free tours, which I would highly recommend. The most interesting case that I read, was the fact of a young woman who strangled her husband and then tried to blame it on the inclement weather… or something like that.
Whilst I was too late to get to the tour, I’ve read rave reviews and got some great feedback from the place I stayed. And they were right on the money about the Quicksilver tour to the Great Barrier Reef.
Definitely something to look into. You can’t really know a place, unless you know what it’s been through to make it into the location it is today.
