[WP] As you’ve slept, the teddy bear you adore has fought off demons to keep you safe. The night before you decide you’re going to get rid of him, seeing as how you’ve outgrown him, you awake to witness his last stand against the forces that want to take you.

Really Jack?

But Dad, I can’t sleep without him.

You’re too old for this. What’s going to happen when you go for sleepovers?

I’m going to take Teddy with me.

We all have to grow up some day, Jack. I just don’t want people making fun of my special little man.

Oh stop it Dad.

Well think about what I said. No son of mine is going to be teased.

My friends will understand.

Looking into Jack’s face, Dad had to relent.

“Yeah, probably.” he sighed.

Good night kiddo.

Night Dad. I love you.

I love you too.

Dad walked out of the room. Now Jack and I were alone.

Teddy, do you think I am too old for you?

You have no idea, do you Jack.

We’ve had so many great memories. Epic battles, flying through space, saving the princess, destroying the towns. But maybe Dad’s right. I know Tom’s having a sleepover for his birthday in a few months.

Jack pushed back Teddy’s fur. The imaginary battles they fought together seemed to have left some parts of his fur singed. Odd because Jack never actually played with Teddy around fire. But they did go camping together that one time.

Maybe it is time I grew up Teddy.

Maybe Jack, but maybe you should keep me around for a little bit longer.

Night Teddy.

Night Jack.

And once Jack was fast asleep, Teddy sprung into action. The mist had already begun to come through under the door. They were becoming more and more courageous. They no longer waited for the children to sleep anymore.

“So how will we do it this time Teddy?”, a long slender green skinned man in a suit entered the room.

Like we always do Sam.

You know we will win, don’t you Teddy.

Not as long as I’m alive, you won’t.

He doesn’t believe you anymore. What are you going to do then? Your strength has already started fading. Are you strong enough to take me on this time? What makes you think you will still be able to win?

The air in the room intensified. It was heating up. Teddy had felt this before and immediately began uttering the incantation to negate it.

Sam in his impeccable black suit launched the fireball right across the room and Teddy launched back with a water shot. Steam filled the room and whilst everything was frozen, Teddy felt like there was something not quite right. Sam launched an electric bolt hoping to use the water and steam to knock Teddy off balance, but the little bear was too smart for him. He defended with an earth spell and once more it was a stalemate.

Jack was awake and watching his little Teddy bear fighting this ugly green thing in a suit.

As Teddy’s back was turned, Sam launched another attack and Teddy was knocked off the edge of his bed.

A rage filled Jack’s heart and he yelled on top of his voice a loud angry no. A no so loud that shook the foundations of the house. Sam’s face was being contorted and just behind him a black circle opened up. He looked back and could see nothing, nothing but tiny dots of light. It was a vacuum and it was sucking him in.

How…….unless…. No way. I told you Teddy. He’s the one. We will come for him. No matter how long it takes, we will make our way back. And we will get him.

With that, Sam opened up his arms, closed his eyes and stopped resisting the urge that was pulling him backwards.

Teddy got up and stood in front of Jack.

I have to go Jack. If I don’t stop him, there will be others.

But will I ever see you again?

I want to say yes, but chances are, even if I travelled at light speed, I won’t get back in time.

Don’t go Teddy. Please don’t go. You are my only friend. Please I love you. Don’t leave me….

I’ve got to go. I stood guard over you for years and I will be damned if I let them come get you.

Jack was crying bitterly covering his face with his little hands. Teddy walked up to him and hugged him.

“No matter how far apart we are, I will always be here …” Teddy pointed to Jack’s heart.

…and here I will stay. You are stronger than you think, braver than you believe and capable of so much more. I believe in you and will always be beside you.

Jack hugged his Teddy, his little Teddy that he was about to give up on. And with another hug goodbye, Teddy got up, turned around and walked to the edge of the bed.

The blast from Sam has singed his back but Jack was so proud of his Teddy. Now all those scuff marks around the room, the tears in the clothes, would have been from all the countless battles that Teddy would’ve fought on his behalf.

Goodbye Jack.

Bye Teddy….

The hole closed as Teddy stepped through it.

… I love you.

Just then the door burst open. It was Dad.

Are you ok? I heard you yelling and came running….are you ok Jack.

Oh Dad you won’t believe me if I told you!
